When choosing new window frames, one question is inevitable: HR++ or triple glazing? Both are excellent — but which suits your home and budget? Here’s an honest comparison.
What is HR++ glazing?
HR++ is high-efficiency double glazing: two panes, an insulating gas filling and a heat-reflective coating. It has been the renovation standard in the Netherlands for decades and insulates far better than single or old double glazing.
What is triple glazing?
Triple glazing has three panes and two gas-filled cavities. It insulates considerably better than HR++ and approaches the insulation value of a well-insulated wall. In new-build homes, triple is now the norm.
The comparison
- Insulation: triple glazing performs clearly better (lower U-value) — less heat loss and no cold draught near the window.
- Comfort: with triple glazing the area by the window stays comfortable even in winter; the inner pane stays warmer.
- Noise: both dampen well; specific acoustic builds add further reduction.
- Price: triple costs more per m² and its weight requires sturdier profiles and hardware.
- Subsidy: the ISDE subsidy per m² is higher for triple than for HR++.
When to choose HR++
HR++ is an excellent choice on a tighter budget, in homes where walls and roof are not yet well insulated, or when keeping existing frames that cannot carry the weight of triple glazing.
When to choose triple glazing
If you are installing new frames anyway, the extra cost of triple glazing is relatively small — and you enjoy maximum comfort and the lowest heating bills for decades.
